Mainstream eReader Apps and Low Vision Accessibility

For users that prefer to use an iPad or Android tablet for reading, many eReader apps offer display customizations such as adjustable text sizes, options for changing page colors, and other ways of configuring page layouts that can make it easier to read with low vision. However, it can be challenging to  find detailed information about eReader apps and low vision accessibility for users who rely on these types of display customizations in order to read.

Knowing about eReader apps and low vision accessibility features is especially relevant since DRM protections for purchased eBooks can limit users to certain reading tools (e.g. Amazon Kindle title cannot be read on the Barnes and Noble Nook app). That said, many eReader applications offer features that make it easier to read text and feature cross-platform support for reading across devices. Here is an overview of several mainstream eReader apps for iPad and Android tablets, as well as available accessibility features that benefit low vision users. All apps listed are free to use but require users to create a free account or purchase books separately.

Background: Listing accessibility features for eReader apps

This post on accessibility features for eReader apps documents options for customizing the appearance of text and page layouts for popular eReader applications. The applications included in this list are connected to an eBook store or allow users to download/purchase books within the app itself; apps that are designed with the sole purpose of reading eBooks or that only allow sideloaded content are excluded. Detailed information about screen reader access or accessing eAudiobooks is excluded from this list.

With the exception of Apple Books (which is only available for iOS devices), I compared both the iOS and Android versions of each eReader application to verify that accessibility settings and available font sizes and typefaces were consistent across devices; I used an iPad Air 4th generation for iOS apps with iOS 18.6 and a OnePlus Pad 3 with Android 15 for Android apps.

To test the eReader customization options, I used an EPUB of Pride and Prejudice that had been downloaded from the eBook store for the corresponding app (e.g. Apple Books, Kindle, Barnes and Noble, Google Play Books, Kobo, Libby). Inclusion of an app on this list is not an endorsement or guarantee that it will be accessible for a particular user; available features are subject to change.

Listing eReader app font size estimates

Because many eReader applications have proprietary reading software that does not list precise font sizes, it is impossible to give exact values for eReader font sizes because of the ways in which digital text is rendered in a mobile application and varying screen sizes across devices. I have provided my own estimates based on comparing screenshots to printed samples of text written in Microsoft Word, but these are only an estimate; I had a sighted assistant measure the smallest font size since I cannot see it.

Even if a user theoretically can’t read the largest font size listed for a particular app, I recommend at least checking out the app in case factors like a backlight, increased line spacing, or angled display make the text easier to read compared to reading from paper.

While there are a lot of factors that go into font size and how fonts are displayed on different sized displays, I noticed that some fonts appeared slightly larger (by around 2 pts) on my Android tablet. This makes sense, as the OnePlus Pad 3 has a larger screen size, higher resolution, and pixel density compared to the iPad Air. All font sizes listed within this post are taken from the iOS app.
