Recruiting Participants For Study: Reading Equations With Low Vision

Hello! My name is Veronica Lewis and I am a doctoral student with low vision in the PhD in Education program at George Mason University. I am recruiting volunteers to participate in a research study examining how individuals with low vision read statistics equations when displayed in different formats on a screen.

About the study

Participants will read statistics equations aloud during brief individual sessions conducted via private Zoom meeting. You will not be asked to solve any equations, you will just read them from your screen. Each session is expected to last approximately 15 minutes.

Sessions take place from your own computer, in a private location of your choosing. You may use your personal assistive technology and display settings during the study.

Reading sessions and interviews will be recorded via Zoom (audio, video, and screen sharing) for scoring and research purposes. Recordings will be stored on a password-protected university account with multi-factor authentication and destroyed after data verification is complete. All study files use participant codes, and your name will not be linked to your data.

Participants will not receive compensation.

Time commitment

This study will take place from October 2026 to November 2026 and include the following:

  • 20 reading sessions, approximately 4 sessions per week over 5 weeks, about 15 minutes each, conducted via Zoom
  • 2 semi-structured interviews, one before the reading sessions begin and one after the final session, each approximately 20–30 minutes, also conducted via Zoom
  • Total study participation is approximately 6 weeks, conducted entirely via Zoom.

Participation is entirely voluntary. You may withdraw at any time without penalty.

Eligibility criteria

To participate, individuals must:

  • Be 18 years of age or older
  • Have low vision, defined as vision loss not fully corrected by glasses, contact lenses, or surgery, with corrected vision no better than 20/70 in the better eye
  • Experience difficulty reading standard print
  • Be able to access visual information on a screen, with or without assistive technology or personal display customizations (such as magnification, high contrast, or zoom)
  • Be able to join private Zoom meetings from their own computer and share their screen
